چکیده
BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE The prototype for bacterial infection-related GN (also called postinfectious GN) is poststreptococcal GN, which most often occurs in children following a pharyngeal or cutaneous infection (impetigo) caused by a particular nephritogenic strain of Streptococci, and usually has a favorable outcome. However, in the last decades the spectrum of postinfectious GN has changed. The incidence of poststreptococcal GN, particularly in its epidemic form, has progressively declined in industrialized countries. Recent series reported that streptococcal infections accounted for only 28–47% of acute GN, Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis being isolated in 12–24% of cases and Gram-negative bacteria in up to 22% of cases. Bacterial endocarditis and shunt infections are also frequently associated with postinfectious GN. Moreover, the atypical postinfectious GN tends to affect mainly adults who are immunocompromised, e.g., in association with alcoholism, diabetes, and drug addiction. While spontaneous recovery within a few weeks is still the rule in children affected by the typical poststreptococcal GN, the prognosis in immunocompromised adults with postinfectious GN is significantly worse, with less than 50% in complete remission after a long follow-up.

Hepatitis B Virus - associated Glomerulonephritis
H B virus (HBV) infection has been shown to induce several extra-hepatic lesions, especially through deposition of immune complexes in different organs (1-5). The exact mechanisms through which certain patients with chronic HBV infection develop glomerulonephritis are not well understood. However, several reports have suggested a role for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The diagnosis of HB...
متن کاملImmune complex renal disease and human immunodeficiency virus infection.
Immune complex glomerulonephritis is a common diagnosis in renal biopsy series of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. There are a variety of glomerulonephritides associated with HIV infection, including IgA nephropathy, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, membranous nephropathy, lupus-like glomerulonephritis, immunotactoid glomerulopathy, and fibrillary glomerulonephriti...
متن کاملHypotonic fluids should not be used in volume-depleted children.
To the Editor: We read with interest the excellent article of Daugas et al [1] on HAART-related nephropathies and we would like to clarify several points. There has been no case report of Fanconi syndrome (FS) related to reverse transcriptase inhibitors (RTIs) except one induced by didanosine [2]. Actually, the suspected case of nevirapine-induced FS was largely related to lactic acidosis rathe...
متن کاملNephrotic Syndrome without Hematuria due to Infection-Related Glomerulonephritis Mimicking Minimal-Change Disease in a Child
Nephrotic syndrome without hematuria due to infection-related glomerulonephritis is uncommon. The present report describes a case of nephrotic syndrome due to infection-related glomerulonephritis without hematuria and hypertension in an older child. A 14-year-old boy was referred to our hospital because of a 5-day history of fever, nausea, weight gain and recent leg edema without hypertension. ...
متن کاملRituximab induces regression of hepatitis C virus-related membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis in a renal allograft.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection complicates clinical outcome in liver and renal allografts [1]. Besides its important contribution to chronic liver disease, HCV infection is also a relevant cause of de novo immunemediated glomerulonephritis in both kidney and liver transplantation [2,3]. It has been shown that the development of de novo membranous and especially membranoproliferative glomerul...
